Is Satan Using Your Friends and Family to Try to Destroy Your Destiny?

If you’ve ever felt a deep calling from God to step into something greater—maybe launching a business, becoming a Kingdom entrepreneur, or creating wealth to impact others—then you’ve likely faced an unexpected and painful reality: the people closest to you are often the ones who discourage you the most.
Maybe you thought your friends and family would cheer you on. Maybe you expected them to believe in you, support your journey, and celebrate your obedience to God’s call. But instead, they rolled their eyes. They doubted you. They questioned your decisions. They treated your dream like it was nothing.
I know this pain firsthand.
My Story: When Family Rejection Cuts Deep
I could write a whole book about our journey, but today, I’ll just share a snippet.
In 2004, my husband and I made a life-altering decision. We sold two successful businesses and our home and left behind everything—our family, our church, our comfort—to pursue what we felt God was calling us to do. We weren’t chasing money. We weren’t trying to run from anything. We simply wanted to be obedient.
But Satan had other plans.
The moment we arrived in our new state, all hell broke loose. One by one, everything we had built, worked for, and relied upon was stripped away. We lost everything. The devastation was beyond words.
In the midst of it all, we were introduced to network marketing. For the first time, we saw a glimmer of hope—a way to recover financially and rebuild. I was excited. I believed this could help us get back on our feet.
So, on our next trip back home, I eagerly shared what we had found with our family. I expected support, encouragement, maybe even a little enthusiasm. After all, these were the people who KNEW what we had been through. They KNEW the sacrifices we had made for the things of God.
But instead of rallying around us, they rejected us.
And not just a casual "we’re not interested" kind of rejection. Their level of utter disdain and dismissal was so gut-wrenching that it cut me to my core. From that day forward, I made a vow: I would NEVER approach anyone like that again.
Have you ever experienced something like this?
These weren’t random strangers on the street that I tapped on the shoulder to sell snake oil to. These were our friends and family—the people who should have wanted to see us succeed. But instead of offering even a shred of support, they tried to grind us down and crush us completely.
It was a dagger to the heart.
Why Does This Happen?
The truth is, Satan LOVES to use the people closest to you to plant doubt, fear, and discouragement.
He knows that rejection from strangers won’t stop you, but rejection from those you love might.
He knows that if he can get you to believe the lies of those closest to you, he can kill your dream before it even starts.
He knows that if he can use familiar voices to make you second-guess your calling, he can keep you from stepping into your God-given destiny.
This isn’t new. Joseph experienced the same thing.
"Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other. "Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams." – Genesis 37:19-20
Joseph’s own brothers—his own family—were so jealous and threatened by his God-given dreams that they literally plotted to destroy him. If it happened to Joseph, it can happen to you.
How to Protect Your Dream from Dream Killers
If you’ve experienced this type of rejection, you might be wondering: What do I do now? Should I just give up?
Absolutely not.
Here’s how you fight back:
✅ Keep your dream close to your vest. Not everyone needs to know what God is doing in your life. Some people are not spiritually mature enough to handle your calling. "Do not cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn and tear you to pieces." – Matthew 7:6
✅ Surround yourself with faith-filled voices. You don’t need a crowd cheering you on—you just need one or two people who truly believe in you. "Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." – Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
✅ Remember that their rejection is NOT a reflection of your calling. Just because someone doesn’t support you doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path. Many people reject what they don’t understand. "A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home." – Mark 6:4
✅ Stay laser-focused on God’s voice, not theirs. At the end of the day, you don’t need their approval—you only need God’s. "Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established." – Proverbs 16:3

Final Thoughts: The Enemy Can’t Stop What God Has Started
If you take nothing else from this post, hear this:
The enemy has NO power to destroy your destiny—unless you let him.
The rejection, the doubt, the opposition from friends and family? It’s just noise. It hurts, but it does NOT determine your future.
Only God does.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." – Jeremiah 29:11
So don’t give up. Don’t cave in. Don’t let their words become your truth.
God has called you to this. He will equip you for it. And no amount of rejection can cancel the purpose He has placed on your life.
Now, go build what God told you to build. 🚀
